NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin track and field teams will open competition in the Southland Conference Championships Saturday in Arlington. The 11-team meet is scheduled to run through Monday on the campus of Texas-Arlington. The Ladyjacks are looking to carry over their success from the indoor season, when they won the SLC indoor crown. On the men's side, SFA is out to win its second conference title overall and first since the 2005 SLC Indoors.
At the individual level, several SFA athletes come into the meet with marks that rank among the conference leaders. Junior Reggie Lazenby is the odds-on favorite to win the long jump. His season-best mark of 25-04.50 ranks in the Top 10 nationally and leads the conference's next-best jumper by eight inches. In the 5,000-meter run, Rodney Joseph's time of 14:47.11 ranks second in the league. The Lumberjack 4x100-meter relay team is also second among conference teams, with a time of 40.41. Ryder Peacock and Justin Reyes are tied for the conference's third-best high jump performance, each having cleared 6-08.75 this season.
In women's competition, Crystal Chang and Ashley Monteau lead the league in the heptathlon and 5,000-meter run, respectively. Chang's score of 5,266 points leads the second-best conference performance by nearly 200 points. Monteau's best time of the season in the 5,000 is 16:52.61. Stevina Wyatt's time of 1:00.07 in the 400-meter hurdles is the second-best in the conference this season. In the high jump, Meghan Denman and Audrey Azu are tied for second place at a height of 5-08.75. Alecia Green is second in the conference in the long jump with a mark of 19-09.50. Green also holds the third-fastest time in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.74. Katrina Roundtree ranks third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.58. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Katrina Nicholas is third in the league with a time of 11:13.65. Kristina Windham's season-best height of 12-05.50 in the pole vault ranks third in the conference.
The meet is scheduled to start Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the combined events. Field events will also begin at 10 a.m. with the javelin, and the 10,000 meters will be run at 8:30 p.m. Combined events will resume at 9 a.m. Sunday, and field event competition will start back up at 1 p.m. The preliminaries for the running events will begin at 5 p.m., with the steeplechase finals set to begin at 8:30. The action will wrap up Monday, starting with field events at 1 p.m. The running finals will begin at 5 p.m., with the last race of the day scheduled for 7:40 p.m.
