Throwers Shine in Denton

DENTON, Texas - Led by a strong effort in the throws, the Stephen F. Austin track and field teams competed Thursday night at the Jason's Deli Mean Green Twilight Invitational, hosted by North Texas. The Lumberjack and Ladyjack throwers combined for four Top 3 finishes, including the lone first-place performance of the meet for SFA.
Sarah Emerson won the javelin throw with a mark of 132-08. Colleen Lonergan took second in the hammer with a throw of 157-01. On the men's side, James Williams and Scott Reid both recorded third-place showings - Williams in the shot put with a throw of 50-07.25, and Reid in the hammer with a mark of 150-09.
The Ladyjacks also put together a strong showing in the vertical jumps. Audrey Azu took third in the high jump with a height of 5-08.75, and Laura Mikeska and Kristina Windham took second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. Both cleared a height of 11-11.75.
Sprinter Stephon Rhea took third in the 400-meter dash with his time of 48.14. Rhea later joined Johnny Thacker, Alex Harris and Erik Powell for a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. The Lumberjacks posted a time of 40.85 in the event. Rodney Joseph ran the 1,500 meters in 4:06.25 to finish second, and Geoffrey Carey cleared 15-07.00 in the pole vault to take silver.
SFA will return to action on Saturday, May 6, for the Houston Invitational. It is the last scheduled meet of the year before the Southland Conference Championships, set to take place in Arlington this year.
