NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks' victory Friday night, combined with a Texas-Arlington loss at McNeese State, wrapped up the 2006 Southland Conference title and threw out all the tiebreaker scenarios. The Ladyjacks trounced Sam Houston State, 84-45, on Senior Night in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The victory improved the Ladyjacks to 20-7 (.741) overall and 14-2 (.875) in league play.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early lead, 19-10, behind some solid shooting and even better defense. While the Ladyjacks finished the game 28-of-67 (.418) from the floor, they held the Bearkats to 17-of-68 (.250) performance and forced them into 27 turnovers. The Bearkats never posed a serious threat in the second half.
The Ladyjacks' four seniors said good-bye to the SFA faithful with great individual performances. LaToya Mills led the team with 15 points and pulled down six rebounds. Kendria Smith scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked six shots. Britany Vinson added 12 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out six assists. Kirby Killingsworth added eight points, two rebounds and four steals.
The Ladyjacks' four seniors led the way, but the Ladyjacks received a huge contribution from their bench. SFA's reserves outscored Sam Houston's backups, 36-19. The Ladyjacks reserves were led by junior Charity Egenti, who scored 12 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks will open the Southland Conference Championships Monday against eighth-seeded Lamar. The game against the Lady Cardinals is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum .
