NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got 12 points from sophomore Natashia Green Friday night but lost its season opener to Tulane, 75-52, at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans, La.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to a 6-0 lead by knocking down their first three field goals of the night, but SFA wasn't able to hold the advantage for very long. Tulane battled right back behind Jami Montagnino's 11 first-half points. Tulane built its advantage to as many as 13 points in the second half before heading into the locker room with a 40-29 lead.
The Ladyjacks shot 12-of-30 (40 percent) in the first half, but were hurt by 19 first-half turnovers. Tulane finished the half 15-of-32 (47 percent) from the floor and 7-of-10 (.700) from the free throw line.
SFA cut the Tulane lead down to single digits, 46-37, with 16:11 remaining in the contest, but the Green Wave went on a run of its own to build the advantage right back. Tulane outscored SFA, 16-4, over the next 10:58 of the game to build a 22-point advantage.
SFA finished the game 20-of-55 (36 percent) from the floor, while Tulane went 26-of-53 (49 percent), and 6-of-14 (43 percent) from beyond the arc. SFA outrebounded Tulane, 37-35, led by Egenti's team-high seven rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Mississippi. The game against the Golden Eagles is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
