
Harrison, Gadeva Take Second Place Finishes

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team had a strong showing in its 2006 fall schedule debut Friday and Saturday at the SFA Tennis Complex. The Ladyjacks had two second place finishes in the SFASU Invitational that hosted eight teams in Central Arkansas, McNeese State, Texas State, Lamar, Tyler Junior College, Texas-Pan American and Centenary College.
Senior Laura Harrison and freshman Roxana Enica defeated Central Arkansas' No. 1 doubles team with 8-2 win and then defeated McNeese State's Urska Dobersek and Petra Gudelj, 8-5, to advance to the Flight 1 Doubles finals. The Ladyjack duo fell, 8-5, to Kaldrina Harburi and Tanya Roberts of Lamar.
In Flight 2 doubles, Ladyjack freshmen, Tatiana Smolnikova and Rijalda Zejnik, got out of the first round with an 8-4 win over Tyler Junior College's Kim Kennedy and Austin Mills, but were then defeated by UCA's Jenny Paine and Heidi Miller, 8-4.
SFA's Gabi Gadeva and Nicole Schoenauer took an 8-4 win over Courtney Meyers and Kate Buchanan from Centenary College in the Flight 3 consolation match.
In Flight 1 singles action, SFA's Laura Harrison took a 6-0, 6-3 win from Centenary's Christine Majchrowicz, but fell to Lamar's Kaldrina Harburi in the semi-finals.
Enica, who was making her collegiate debut, had escaped the first round with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 win over UCA's Paine and took a 6-1, 6-2 victory from McNeese State's Vicky Martinez to advance to the Flight 2 singles final match. The Constanta, Romania, native fell to Tanya Roberts from Lamar, 6-3, 6-0, in the championship.
Gadeva, a sophomore from Bulgarian capital of Sofia, defeated Texas-Pan American's Stephanie Willerding, 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round of the Flight 3 singles before taking a 6-4, 6-1 victory from McNeese State's Natascha Jongeneel to advance to the finals. However, Lamar's Pamela Martinez took the win, 6-0, 6-2.
In Flight 4, SFA newcomer Tatiana Smolnikova defeated Centenary's Jen Majchrowicz, 6-0, 6-0, advancing to the second round. But Texas State's Andrea Guraldo took a 6-0, 6-1, win from Smolnikova.
In Flight 7 Singles, sophomore Mary Harrison defeated Central Arkansas' Ana Selva, 6-1, 6-1, and proceeded to defeat Teo Costin from McNeese State 6-4, 2-5, 10-5 to advance to the finals. However, Texas State's Alejandra Gulida took the 6-3, 6-3 win. Gulida had defeated SFA's Schoenauer, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the finals.
The Ladyjacks will return to the court on Oct. 20 at the University of Memphis tournament in Memphis Tenn.
