NACOGDOCHES - Senior forward LaToya Mills scored a team-high 26 points, as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (6-5) jumped back over the .500 mark with an 85-67 victory over Jackson State Friday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The victory closes out the 2005-06 non-conference schedule for SFA.
The Ladyjacks were a solid 16-for-28 (57 percent) from the floor in the first half, as they built a nine-point advantage going into intermission. SFA cooled off slightly in the second half and were out-rebounded by four, but the Ladyjacks defense held Jackson State at bay. SFA forced the Lady Tigers into 23 turnovers as it built its lead to as many as 17 with 12:30 remaining in the game.
Jackson State cut the lead to eight, 74-66 with 1:23 left behind Shelita Burns' 31 points and seven rebounds. But it was enough as the Ladyjacks hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the victory.
SFA finished the game 31-of-62 (50 percent) from the floor, while knocking down 5-of-13 (.39 percent) three-point attempts. The Ladyjacks held JSU to a 25-of-60 (42 percent) performance.
Mills led the Ladyjacks with 26 points, while classmate Kirby Killingsworth added 15 and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Killingsworth also recorded a game-high six steals. Junior Evelyn Edwards scored nine points on 3-of-5 (60 percent) shooting.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday Jan. 5, when they host Nicholls State at 7 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
