NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin equestrian team will host its first home show Sunday when the Ladyjacks welcome South Dakota State to Nacogdoches for a dual meet. The competition scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the equestrian arena on the Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Farm north of Nacogdoches.
Sunday's show will include both Western and Hunt Seat competition. Both participating programs are in their first year competing in equestrian as a varsity sport. The Ladyjacks are coming off a successful road trip to Stillwater, Okla., where they took third place in a pair of western riding shows that featured nine teams. In its season opener, SFA was defeated by Auburn in dual competition. South Dakota State has competed in four dual shows, losing all three. The Jackrabbits were defeated by Baylor on Friday.
"It's very exciting," SFA head coach Leigh Heusner said of her program's first home show. "It should be a very good competition. They are in their first year as a varsity team, just like we are, so it should be a very close match."
Heusner said her team is looking forward to competing among the comforts of home, after opening the season with two road trips.
"It'll be nice to ride our own horses and have that homefield advantage," she said. "Our girls are really comfortable on our horses, and that should carry over into their performance."
Sunday's event is open to the public and free of charge. The equestrian arena is situated on the east side of Highway 259, just north of the Highway 204 intersection. Heusner said she is looking forward to the opportunity to show fans what her team has been working on for the last few months.
"It will be a good chance to do a little spectator education and let some folks come out and learn something about the equestrian events," Heusner said.
