AUBURN, Ala. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack equestrian team fell to Auburn in its first-ever competition on Saturday. The Tigers earned a team total of 1,195 points to SFA's 1,101.5.
SFA head coach Leigh Heusner said she was pleased with her team's performance in the first meet of its inaugural season.
"I thought we did great," Heusner said. "The girls really put forth a super effort. They performed their patterns exactly like I wanted them to, and they all performed very well."
In the over fences portion of the competition, Auburn won by a margin of 296-276. Alex Berry and Rebecca Harrison led the way with 72 and 74 points, respectively.
In horsemanship, four Ladyjacks broke the 70-point barrier as SFA fell in a tight battle, 294.5-290. Kayla Krambeck scored 73.5, Jamie Melgares scored 73, Jenny Martin scored 72 and Monika Brindley tallied a score of 71.5.
Auburn won the equitation competition, 312-262, despite the strong efforts of Harrison and Alex Fincher. Both SFA riders posted a score of 74.
Reining was another close contest, with Auburn taking a 292.5-273.5 victory. Melgares paced SFA with a score of 71.5 in a ride Heusner called "awesome."
"Some of it didn't go quite our way," Heusner said. "But for the most part, the horses were nice and the girls stepped up and had an awesome effort. Everyone there said they couldn't believe that this was our first year to compete."
SFA will return to the arena Nov. 5-6 for a meet at Oklahoma State, in Stillwater, Okla.
