SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Despite a 16-point, 12-rebound performance from junior Hank Rivers, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team lost to Texas-San Antonio, 74-70, Friday in the Southland Conference Championship game. The Lumberjacks finish the season with a 21-9 (.700) overall record.
The Lumberjacks shot 14-of-33 (.424) from the floor in the first half but still trailed by four heading into the locker room, 35-31. UTSA came out in the second half and pushed its advantage to as many as 12 points behind Leroy Hurd's 23 points and nine rebounds.
The Lumberjacks rallied late in the second half, cutting the lead to two points, 68-66, with just minutes remaining behind sophomore Marcus Clark's 14-point second half performance. Clark finished the game with 16 points. But the Lumberjacks were hurt by fouls and a lack of production from beyond three-point range. SFA finished the game only 3-of-20 (.150) from beyond the arc, while Rivers and senior Antonio Burks both fouled out of the game.
Burks finished the game with 12 points, while classmate Dedrick Sanders scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds. Senior B.J. Banks scored three points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists, while classmate Jasen Gast closed out his career with a nine-point effort.
Burks knocked down two three-pointers, setting a new SFA single-season record (78).
