Plano, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team has been picked to finish fifth in a poll of the Southland Conference head coaches and sports information directors announced league officials Thursday.
The Ladyjacks received 27 points to finish fifth in the head coach's poll. SFA received one first-place vote and 36 points to finish fifth among the league's sports information directors. Southwest Texas was picked to repeat as SLC champion.
The Ladyjacks are coming off a season where they recorded a 7-9-4 overall mark and just missed the conference tournament with a 4-4-4 league record. The Ladyjacks return eight starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2002 team.
Three Ladyjacks were named to the Preseason All-SLC team Thursday led by first-team pick Natascia Michalezki. Junior Christie Mestayer and sophomore Kim Gray received second-team consideration.
Michalezki returns from a rookie season that saw her rank among the league leaders with 154 saves, a 1.72 goals against average and six shutouts. The 154 saves is an SFA single-season record and currently place her third all-time in school history.
Mestayer returns from a sophomore season that saw her finish among the team leaders in points, goals and assists. She earned second-team all-conference honors last season and is the school's all-time leader in assists.
Gray returns from rookie season where she recorded second-team All-SLC honors. Gray was key member of one of the best defensive units in school history, helping the Ladyjacks record six shutouts.
