DURHAM, N.C. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basektball team fell to 0-4 on the season Sunday afternoon, losing to Crieghton on the second day of the Duke Women's Basketball Classic. The Bluejays recorded a 91-64 victory over SFA.
Junior Alex Bowman knocked down a three-point shot to start the scoring for the Ladyjacks. But Creighton responded by rattling off eight-unanswered points over the next 1:22 of the contest. The Ladyjacks defense stiffened not allowing another Bluejay field goal over the next 2:08 of the ball game but SFA wasn't able to turn the defense into offense, shooting 10-of-28 (.357) shooting in the first half of action. The Ladyjacks were also hurt on the boards being outrebounded, 49-32, by the Bluejays.
The Bluejays warmed up from the floor and increased their advantage to as many as 22 points before going into halftime with a 52-32 advantage. Creighton was 15-of-34 (.441) from the field and 6-of-15 (.400) from beyond the three-point line to biuld its lead.
The Bluejays built their lead to as many as 35 points in the second half before SFA went on a run to cut the lead to 25 points, 76-51, with 5:24 remaining. Sophomore Kirby Killingsworth sparked the run with her team-high 16 points on 6-of-12 (.500) shooting. She also broke out of her minor slump from beyond the arc, nailing four triples. But the Ladyjacks could get no closer.
Sophomore LaToya Mills added 10 points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Junior Tiffany Perkins scored eight points and grabbed two rebounds. Bowman finished the game with six points and three rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday in the Gene Hackerman/Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas. SFA will face tournament-host Rice at 7 p.m., in the first round of the tournament.
