NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will be leaving the friendly confines of the William R. Johnson Coliseum to open a four-game road swing. The Ladyjacks open the trip Saturday in Durham, N.C., at the Duke Women's Basketball Classic. SFA will square-off with tournament-host No. 4 (ESPN/USA Today poll) Duke Saturday at 3 p.m. The Ladyjacks will be back in action less than 24 hours later to face either No. 28 Auburn or No. 40 Creighton. Every game of the tournament will be played at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
SFA vs. the Blue Devils: Saturday's game between Duke and SFA will be the first meeting between the two schools on the basketball court.
SFA vs. the Tigers: If the Ladyjacks play Auburn on Sunday it would be the third meeting between the two schools. The Tigers have won both the two previous meetings, taking a 72-44 decision last season in Nacogdoches. The first meeting came during the 1983-84 season when the Tigers recorded a 85-61 victory.
SFA vs. the Blue Jays: If the Ladyjacks face Creighton on Sunday it would be the fourth meeting between the two schools. SFA holds a 2-1 (.667) all-time series record over Creighton. The Ladyjacks lost the first meeting in the series, which came during the 1985-86 season, but SFA has rattled off two-straight wins with the last one being a 75-74 decision during the 1991-92 season.
Tradition of Winning: The SFA Ladyjack basketball program has been one of the most dominant in women's basketball history. The Ladyjacks are among the nation's all-time top 10 with 729 wins. The Ladyjacks are also among the all-time top 10 with a .750 winning percentage (729-243).
Tradition of Winning in the SLC: As dominant as SFA has been nationally, they have been just as dominant in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks are the conference's most dominant team, compiling a 249-25 (.909) all-time record. SFA has won 14 of a possible 16 SLC tournament titles and 13 regular-season titles. SFA has also recorded four undefeated seasons in league play and has had 36 players named All-SLC.
The Century Mark: The Ladyjacks season-opening loss to Louisiana Tech marked the 43rd time in school history that the Ladyjacks played in a game where one team scored in triple digits. Despite the loss to the Lady Techsters, SFA has been dominant in 100-point games, recording a 41-2 (.953) all-time record.
Youth Movement: In the Ladyjacks first two games it has been the newcomers leading the way. The rookies have scored 75 percent of the points. In both games, the newcomers have recorded team-highs in points, rebounds and assists with the only exception being sophomore LaToya Mills tying for the team lead in points (9) and rebounds (5) against the Rams.
Looking Ahead ... The Ladyjacks will conclude the four-game road trip in Houston, Texas at the Gene Hackerman/Rice Invitational. SFA will face tournament-host Rice at 7 p.m., on Friday Dec. 5th. The Ladyjacks will back on the court less than 24 hours later to face either Baylor or Eastern Kentucky. The second game will tipoff at 5 or 7 p.m., based on the outcome of the Ladyjacks first game. Both games will be played at Autry Court.
