NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin softball coach Jennifer Poulsen said that she was extremely encouraged and pleased with her team's performance in a three game sweep at the SFA Fall Tournament, held this past Saturday at the Coy Simms Softball Complex. SFA won three straight games, all by shutout, by a combined score of 14-0.
"I was very encouraged by what I saw on the field Saturday. Not only did our returners come back in great shape ready to play, but I'm also very excited about the new players we?ve added to the team. We played well in all three games and it gives us a good idea of where we need to go and the things we need to work on, as we prepare to take the field again in three weeks. Not only did they play well, but they also played with a sense of pride. I saw a lot of people out there who were happy to be here playing, representing SFA," said Poulsen.
With only two seniors on this year's roster, Poulsen also said that Saturday's performance is encouraging in regards to the future of the program. "We'll only lose two seniors over the course of the next two years, so this group of players has the chance to play together for quite some time and develop that bond that good teams have," continued Poulsen.
SFA had solid performances from several newcomers, but was also encouraged by the play of several returners. Second baseman Meryl McGuire went four for seven (.571) at the plate and scored four runs for SFA, and the return of Jaime Brown in the outfield solidifies the outfield defense.
Crissy Autry, a junior right hander from Galveston College, and Nicole Carter, a freshman from Sacramento, Calif., combined to pitch the three games, with Autry striking out 13 and Carter recording nine strikeouts as they combined for the three shutouts. The 'Jacks recorded three shutouts all of last season.
At the plate, Carrie Woydziak, a freshman from Round Rock, led the way going four for eight and scoring four runs. Tara Hersey, a freshman infielder from Santa Fe, was also five for nine (.555) with two doubles in the three games, helping the 'Jacks to the sweep.
SFA returns to the field October 19 at Texas A&M.
