NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Student-athletes from the Stephen F. Austin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee are sponsoring a food drive to benefit area food banks this weekend, in conjunction with a number of Stephen F. Austin athletic events.
Admission to the Lumberjack football game with Northwestern State Saturday afternoon is free with the donation of a canned food item. Donations of canned goods will also get free admission to the Conoco Classic Friday and Saturday, and free admission can also be gained to Lumberjack basketball's season opener Sunday afternoon in the coliseum.
Representatives from various intercollegiate teams on campus will be on hand at the entrances to Homer Bryce Stadium and the William R. Johnson Coliseum accepting donations of nonperishable food items throughout the entire weekend.
"Anyone wanting to see some great college athletic action can do so this weekend for the cost of a canned good. We will be taking donations at the football game, the women's basketball tournament and at the men's basketball season opener Sunday afternoon," said Advisory Committee sponsor Darren Fort. "This is a great opportunity for anyone in the community to see some great college athletic action and also help out a member of area food banks."
Following the collection efforts throughout the weekend, the donated items will then be distributed to area food banks in time to help re-stock their shelves in time for Thanksgiving.
The food drive begins Friday night at the coliseum as the first round of the Conoco Classic begins at 6:00 p.m. Donations will be taken throughout the evening there. Saturday, the collections will continue at the gates of Homer Bryce Stadium for the 2:00 kickoff of the Lumberjacks versus Northwestern State football game. Donations will again be accepted Saturday evening for the finals of the Conoco Classic beginning at 6:00, and culminate with the Lumberjacks' season opening basketball game with Loyola-Chicago Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
