Ladyjacks go 2-1, record 3,618 pins in bracket play to secure fifth-place finish at Sam Houston State’s Track Kat Klash
HOUSTON, Texas – In its third tournament of the fall, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team collected a fifth-place finish Sunday afternoon at Sam Houston State's Track Kat Klash in Houston after going 2-1 in bracket play. The Ladyjacks secured their third top-five finish of the season and 46th-straight top-10 placement with 3,618 pins on the day and a pair of victories over ranked opponents.
Through the three days of competition at the Emerald Lanes, SFA went 6-6 and tallied 13,113 total pins with two players, senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) and freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.), posting top-20 individual finishes in traditional match play Saturday.
The Ladyjacks avenged their lone loss Sunday in the final match of the day, taking down fifth-ranked Sam Houston State 4-2 in the fifth-place match after picking up a 4-2 win over 12th-ranked Delaware State. Opening up bracket play with the first of two bowling versions of the Battle of the Piney Woods, No. 6 SFA was defeated 4-2 by the fifth-seeded Bearkats in the first round.
With a starting lineup of freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada), sophomore Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas), freshmen Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) and Gill, and Schwartz, the Ladyjacks found themselves trailing 3-1 in the match before recording a dominant 229-176 game five win. However, a five-pin 202-197 win by Sam Houston State in game six sent SFA on a course of pursuing fifth place. The Ladyjacks rebounded by earning a 4-2 victory over 12th-ranked Delaware State with senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), juniors Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) and Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.), Gill and Schwartz. Despite a 219-199 opening game loss, SFA rattled off three consecutive game wins, including registering a Sunday-best 258 in game two, to take a 3-1 lead in the match. After a loss in game five, the Ladyjacks secured their first match win of the day by claiming game six 185-181.
SFA had to overcome a perfect game bowled by Sam Houston State in the fifth-place match to claim the second Battle of the Piney Woods of the day. Behind Eaglehouse, Beeney, Hazlewood, Gill and Schwartz, the Ladyjacks won the first two games of the match by scores of 196-174 and 209-203. After a game three win by the Bearkats, Sam Houston State bowled a perfect 300 in game four to even up the match at 2-2. However, the very next game the Bearkats tallied just 152 pins as SFA scored an impressive 252 to take a 3-2 lead. The Ladyjacks finished off Sam Houston State 215-187 in game six to complete the match with 1,251 pins and grab fifth place.
