Ladyjacks post 2-3 record, sit in fifth place with a five-match pinfall total of 4,829 after day one at Sam Houston State’s Track Kat Klash
HOUSTON, Texas – Through five Baker matches on the first day of Sam Houston State's Track Kat Klash at the Emerald Lanes in Houston, Texas, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team is in fifth place after tallying a pinfall total of 4,839. The Ladyjacks went 2-3 on the day and averaged a 193.2 per game, picking up a pair of wins over No. 24 Youngstown State and Maryville University.
After dropping the first two matches of the day, SFA won two of the last three to own the fifth-highest pinfall total in the 21-team event, sitting above third-ranked Arkansas State and No. 4 Vanderbilt.
Despite claiming four of the five games in the Ladyjacks' opening match of the day against seventh-ranked Maryland Eastern Shore, SFA fell 954-932. Thanks in large part to a 257 game four outburst by the Hawks. Taking on fourth-ranked Vanderbilt in their second match, the Ladyjacks could not recover after dropping the first two games of the match. SFA won games 3-5 but it wasn't enough as the Commodores escaped with a 57-pin, 982-925 win.
Tallying its highest pin total of the day in match three, the Ladyjacks relied on senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.), freshmen Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) and Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada), and senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) to collect a 1,044-878 victory over No. 24 Youngstown State. SFA won each game of the match except for a narrow, one-pin loss in the fourth game and registered a 235 in the fifth for its highest game score of the day.
Continuing with its same lineup for matches four and five, SFA was defeated 1,080-894 by 10th-ranked Central Missouri before ending the day with a 1,034-932 win over Maryville University. The Ladyjacks got a commanding 193-169 win in game one and claimed the final three games of the match by a 57-pin advantage to secure their second match victory of the day.
Play continues tomorrow at the tournament with five traditional team matches starting at 9:30 a.m. SFA will face top-ranked and defending NCAA champion McKendree University from the Division II ranks in the Ladyjacks' opening match Saturday.
Pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's play will determine Sunday's bracket play seeding. Sunday's bracket play will begin at 8:20 a.m. with three best 4-of-7 Baker matches.
