The Ladyjacks completed their first tournament of the 2017-18 season as redshirt junior Erica Lautensack posted a top-10 finish in the Lady Maxwell Invitational
ARDMORE, Okla. – With a top-10 finish from redshirt junior Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas), the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team finished play in Ardmore, Oklahoma, at the Lady Maxwell Invitational. The season-opening tournament held at Dornick Hills Country Club proved to be challenging for the Ladyjacks as SFA finished sixth with a three-day team score of 92-over 944. However, the Ladyjacks improved upon their day one score of 328 with a 305 Saturday and a 311 Sunday.
"Friday was the first time we had seen the golf course in a week and it showed in the first round", head coach Trey Schroeder said after the tournament. "We took advantage of our good start in the second round and played solid all day for round three. The girls showed a lot of fight and competitiveness on a long, challenging golf course. Scores aside, I'm happy with our play. We are excited for a couple of weeks of practice and play before we head back up to Tulsa."
Lautensack shot a 11-over 224 across the three days to place eighth overall in the tournament. After posting a 10-over 81 in the opening round, Lautensack shot a 3-under 68 Saturday. It was the second-lowest round shot by any golfer in the 39-player field and was just one stroke shy of Lautensack's career-low of 67. En route to picking up her ninth career top-10 finish, Lautensack knocked in a hole-in-one from 148 yards out on hole No. 2 in the second round Saturday. She finished off the tournament by shooting a 4-over 75 Sunday morning, climbing up a spot on the leaderboard to pass Incarnate Word's Elodie Yates.
Sophomore Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas) was the Ladyjacks' second-highest finisher, tying for 21st with a three-day total of 19-over 232. After shooting a 5-over 76 in the first round Friday, Batista posted back-to-back 7-over 78 rounds Saturday and Sunday. The third-highest finisher of SFA's five-player lineup was sophomore Haleigh Jordan (San Antonio, Texas), who tied for 30th with a three-round total of 31-over 244. Jordan improved her first-round score of 17-over 88 by shooting 8-over 79 in the second round Sunday and 6-over 77 in the final round Sunday.
Rounding out the Ladyjacks' scoring five was true freshman Alexis Szewczyk (McKinney, Texas) and sophomore Paola Cortes (Allen, Texas). Szewczyk placed 34th with a three-round score of 36-over 249, improving her day one score of 17-over 88 by eight strokes Saturday in round two and finishing off the tournament with a 10-over 81 Sunday morning. Cortes tied for 35th after shooting 37-over 250 for the three days, posting scores of 11-over 82 Saturday and 14-over 85 Sunday.
The 'Jacks also had three golfers compete as individuals in the Lady Maxwell Invitational with redshirt junior Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) tying for 25th after posting a three-day score of 24-over 237. Jorgensen shot a 9-over 80 in the opening round Friday, before shooting 10-over 81 Saturday and capping the weekend with an improved 5-over 76 Sunday. It was Jorgensen's first tournament back after having to redshirt for the 2016-17 season due to a back injury. Freshman Kelly Yang (Sugar Land, Texas) tallied a tournament score of 37-over 250, tying for 35th with Cortes after shooting 11-over 82 Friday and 13-over 84 in both the second and third rounds.
