SFA first baseman caps Ladyjack career by earning a spot on the league’s all-academic first team following breakout season
FRISCO, Texas – Completing one of the best single seasons in SFA softball history, senior first baseman Margarita Corona can add another accolade next to her name after landing a spot on the 2019 Southland Conference Softball All-Academic First Team, which was announced by the league office Monday afternoon. An All-Southland First Team performer and the Ladyjacks' first Southland Hitter of the Year since 2010, Corona was named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region and set the program's single-season home run record with 13 dingers this spring.
The Tucson, Arizona (Tucson High Magnet School), native helped lead SFA to its second-straight national postseason appearance in 2019 with the Ladyjacks hosting the Postseason National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) Nacogdoches Regional. After being tabbed Southland Hitter of the Week on April 29, Corona picked up all-tournament team honors at the Southland Tournament. She was a force to be reckon with at the plate in her final year donning the Purple and White after transferring to Texas' oldest town from Pima Community College, drawing 37 walks from opposing pitchers during the season to tie the school's single-season record.
Holding a 3.09 grade point average as a kinesiology major, Corona completed the 2019 campaign ranked among national leaders in several offensive categories. The power hitter ranked 55th in the country in both total bases (118) and on-base percentage (.491), 73rd in hits (67) and 74th in walks per game (0.63), while ranking among top NCAA Division I softball players in slugging (.678), batting average (.385) and home runs per game (0.22). No Southland softball player held a higher on-base percentage or slugging mark than Corona in 2019 as she also led the league in home runs, total bases and walks.
The Southland All-Academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games in the position listed (excluding pitchers) to qualify for all-academic selection. Nominees who were also named to the All-Southland First Team or CoSIDA Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
The Southland awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
