NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head women's soccer coach Wally Crittenden announced a promotion to a member of his coaching staff on Tuesday. Dan Bassett, who has served as an assistant coach under Crittenden since his arrival in Nacogdoches five seasons ago, has been moved into the role of Assistant Head Coach, effective immediately and retroactive from the spring season.
"Dan has been an integral part of the success we have had here over the last 5 years and I anticipate one of our best years awaits us this fall", said Crittenden. "Dan's energy and commitment to creative thinking and problem solving have always brought a welcome spirit to our staff and office environment. As we return more defensive experience over the next several seasons than we have had since 2014, there is no doubt that our defensive unit will be a core pillar of our team identity and I am thrilled that Dan will be able to continue to put his stamp on this team now as our Assistant Head Coach. On a personal note, our friendship and commitment to mutual development is a key piece as to why our program culture and staff dynamic is so strong."
Bassett's time in Nacogdoches has been spent working with the defensive backline of the Ladyjacks, as well as serving as the team's video coordinator. During that span, the Ladyjacks have won three Southland Conference regular season titles and have been consistently solid on the defensive end. His work during the 2014 season saw SFA end the season ranked sixth in the country in shutout percentage (.650), seventh in save percentage (.876) and 11th in goals against average (.588) on the way to a 16-3-1 overall record.
Most recently, Bassett's defense was one of the Southland's best in conference play in 2017, allowing a league-low eight goals and notching eight shutouts. Under Bassett's tutelage, defenders Kennedy Rose and Carli Arthurs were named Southland Conference Honorable Mentions along with goalkeeper Allyson Smith, while Rose was honored as a United Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region Second Team selection.
Prior to his arrival at SFA, Bassett served alongside Crittenden at the University of Nebraska as assistant coaches, part of a four-year term in Lincoln. During his time as a volunteer assistant for the Huskers, he also coached the Bellevue West High School boys and girls squads and played two seasons for Bellevue University, helping the Bruins compile a 25-12 record.
A native of Bulkington, England,Bassett moved to the United States in 2004 and began his coaching career with club teams in Kansas City and Omaha. He earned an engineering degree from North Warwickshire and Hinckley College in 2002. While in England, Bassett also spent time coaching the Coventry and Birmingham Women's Centers of Excellence.
