SFA football adds a third defensive end to 2018 signing class, bringing total to 24 incoming players
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Lumberjack football program announced the signing of defensive end Daniel Brewer as Stephen F. Austin's 24th addition to the 2018 signing class Friday morning. Brewer, a junior college transfer from Arkansas Baptist College, signed with the 'Jacks in late February and will arrive in Nacogdoches this summer after receiving his associate's degree this May.
The Carrollton, Texas, native joins 23 newcomers who signed with SFA either during the early period in December or on National Signing Day Wednesday, Feb. 7. Of the 24 additions to the SFA football family, 13 are continuing their education and football careers upon graduating from high school, while 11 are transferring into Nacogdoches.
Brewer is the third defensive end in the Lumberjacks' 2018 signing class, joining Waltrip High School's Tyrell Buard and Huntsville's Amad Murray. The 6-foot-3, 233-pound defensive lineman spent the last two seasons at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he served as defensive captain his sophomore year. Making nine starts at defensive end and another as an outside linebacker, Brewer posted an impressive 45 total tackles, including 12 for loss, six sacks and 17 quarterback hurries for the Buffaloes in his second year, not to mention blocking both a punt and a field goal. As a freshman at Arkansas Baptist, Brewer started four games, registering 24 total tackles, seven of which were for loss, and tallying a pair of sacks.
A four-year letter winner at Newman Smith High School, Brewer started 10 games at wide receiver and defensive end as a freshman. He had 56 total tackles and nine sacks on the defensive side of the ball to go along with 13 receptions for 210 yards and three touchdowns as a receiver. Brewer played primarily as an outside linebacker his final three years of his prep career, starting 11 games over his last two seasons. He recorded 108 total tackles, including 25 tackles for loss, six sacks, 21 quarterback hurries and three pass deflections over his final three varsity seasons. Brewer claimed all-district second-team honors as a junior and led the Trojans to a 7-4 record and a playoff berth his senior year.
Daniel will be majoring in kinesiology at SFA.
The 2018 signing class represents a tremendous effort by the SFA coaching staff not just in the state of Texas, but nationwide as well. The class is comprised of 17 players from Texas and six other states and providences, including Mississippi, South Carolina, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey and Ontario, Canada. Of the 17 Texas additions, seven are from the East Texas corridor with an additional five from the Houston area, three from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and one each from the San Antonio and Austin areas of the Lone Star state.
The 'Jacks are continuing their offseason workouts and conditioning while gearing up for spring practice, which will begin Monday, March 26. SFA's spring practice schedule features 15 total dates and two scrimmages, held Saturday, April 7 at Nacogdoches High School and Saturday, April 14 inside Homer Bryce Stadium. Both scrimmages will kick off at 2 p.m. and all spring practices will get underway at 3:50 p.m. but are subject to change due to weather. The Lumberjacks' annual spring game will culminate spring practice Saturday, April 21 at 6 p.m. in Homer Bryce.
SFA opens up its 2018 campaign at Southeastern Conference mainstay Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi, on Saturday, Sept. 1.
