2017 Skecher’s Performance Carl Kight Invitational – Day One

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin multi-event team had 15 personal bests earned on the first day of the 2017 Carl Kight Invitational on Thursday afternoon at the Fletcher Garner Track. The men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon opened the three-day home meet for the Lumberjacks.
The men started things off first this morning in the decathlon, and sophomore Connor Wilbur leads the SFA men after the completion of the first five events. Wilbur had a terrific start posting a personal best in of 11.31 seconds in the 100-meter sprint. He then went on to jump a new distance of 6.74m (22-01.35) placing him third in the long jump. In four of the five events completed today, Wilbur finished within the top five of each event, including leading the competition in the high jump event where he easily cleared 1.89m (6-02.4).
Sophomores Tanner Parks and Bradley Beaty also set new PRs throughout the day. Both stretched their 100-meter sprint time, while Parks excelled in the long jump and high jump. Beaty went on to tie his record in the shot put event.
For the women, junior Jillian Turner placed herself in second after the first events of the heptathlon. Turner had a fantastic day in the running events. She turned in a new time on her 100-meter hurdles, shaving off 0.6 seconds, and then cut two hundredths of a second off her 200-meter time of 26.06. She finished in the top two of both events.
Freshman Caitlin Lennon improved all the way around, posting new PRs in all four of the events. She finished as high as third in the shot put and 200-meter sprint. Sophomore Kori Westmoreland and freshman Sammi Jo Brashears also put up new numbers in several events.
After day one, Lennon sits fifth, Brashears sixth, and Westmoreland seventh.
The decathlon will resume on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., starting the with the 110-meter hurdles while the heptathlon kicks back up with the long jump at noon. Individual field events also start Friday as the javelin, pole vault, shot put, and long jump get underway at 4:00 p.m. The distance carnival will take over the track at 6:35 p.m.
