Southland Conference Player of the Week Release - Week Eight
FRISCO, Texas – In a week where the Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team played just one game, it was the superb performance of goalkeeper Allyson Smith that locked in the 1-0 result in that game over Central Arkansas on Friday. For her efforts, Smith was tabbed as the Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, per a release from the conference office on Tuesday.
A sophomore from Spring, Texas, Smith was challenged only two times by the vaunted offense of Central Arkansas, thanks in large part to strong team defense by the 'Jacks. Those two shots on goal were substantial opportunities for the Sugar Bears, however, and Smith was up to the task on both occasions.
The first attempt came in the 14th minute, as a shot by UCA's Alex Moore was well placed and looked to be a goal, only to be punched up and into the crossbar by Smith, where it deflected away from goal and ended the threat. The most dangerous chance came in the second half after SFA took a 1-0 lead, as 2016 Southland Player of the Year and 13-goal scorer in last year's campaign Camille Bassett got the ball, shed her Ladyjack escort and had a 1 on 1 breakaway chance at goal, with only Smith in her way. Bassett's point blank shot was saved by Smith with a diving stop to preserve the clean sheet and keep SFA's lead intact, a margin that would end up giving the Ladyjacks the win.
The shutout was the third of the season for Smith, who has posted a .786 save percentage and a 5-5 record while accruing 44 saves on the season. Her selection in this week's release is the first of her career, and marks the third time this season in which an SFA player has earned a player of the week honor.
