Key Finishes Strong to Take Third at ASU

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Hunter Key had a huge second day at the David Noble ASU Multi Meet on campus of Angelo State on Friday afternoon, roaring back to a third place finish in the men's decathlon to lead Stephen F. Austin competitors. Madeline Kaufmann took seventh in the women's heptathlon to lead the Ladyjacks.
After sitting in ninth place after day one, Key turned it on in the final five events on Friday. He made up some ground in the discus throw by finishing third and adding 624 points to his running total. His best throw measured 124-08 (37.99m).
Key really brought his best stuff in the final two events of the day. The sophomore posted the best throw in the javelin among the 14-man field, recording a toss of 191-05 (58.34m) for a huge personal record. He garnered 713 points for his efforts. In the final event of the competition, the 1,500-meter run, Key was clocked at 4:41.72 to take second and collect 670 crucial points.
When it was all said and done, Key finished with 6,720 points to edge Angelo State's Dalton Boyls by seven for third place.
Kaufmann also made a move in day two after sitting in ninth through the first four events of the heptathlon. She finished strong with a 2:27.82 mark in the 800m to add 720 points to her overall total of 4,515 and take seventh place of 18 competitors.
The rest of the track and field teams will be headed to Austin on Saturday to compete in the Texas Invitational on campus of the University of Texas.
