FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin sophomore offensive lineman Anthony Pullins and senior safety Trey Vallier have been named to the 2014 Southland Conference All-Academic Team, announced today by the league office.
It is the first all-academic team selection for the Lumberjack duo who each played a key role in helping SFA to its first postseason appearance since 2010. Pullins started all 13 games at center for the ‘Jacks, helping pave the way for both SLC Player of the Year Gus Johnson and Newcomer of the Year Zach Conque. Pullins, a criminal justice major, was a key member of the SFA offensive line that helped the Lumberjacks average 460.8 yards of offense per game.
Vallier started all 13 at free safety for SFA in his senior season, ranking third on the team with 58 tackles. The Henderson native, majoring in information technology, had a number of key plays on the season, including a fumble return for a touchdown against Sam Houston State and an interception that set up a scoring drive against McNeese State.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member universities, voted for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university.
