The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team has received an Academic Progress Rates (APR) Public Recognition Award for the 2011-12 academic year announced the NCAA Wednesday morning.
"Our women's basketball team really strives for excellence in the classroom," said Director of Athletics Robert Hill. "Everyone knows that in athletics we're in the business of winning, but our first priority is to help our athletes receive a quality education. This is a credit to the basketball staff who has recruited student-athletes who want to graduate."
The NCAA annually honors teams earning multi-year success through APR. The Public Recognition Award looks at data from a four-year period. The most recent four-year rolling average began in the 2008-09 season and goes through the 2011-12 academic year. The award is given to teams that rank among the nation's top-10 percent in their respective sport.
The Ladyjack basketball team is making a strong push for academic honors this season. The SFA women have eight players being nominated for the 2013 SLC Commissioners List - an honor given every semester to athletes maintaining 3.0 grade-point average. Among the Ladyjacks eight nominees, three have at least a 3.4 GPA, including two with a 3.8.
