NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The contract between Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, SFA and Sam Houston State has been extended to keep the annual Battle of the Piney Woods rivalry game in Houston through 2017 announced Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes Wednesday afternoon in Nacogdoches.
The series was moved to Reliant Stadium for four years beginning in 2010, with the option available for it to be extended. The game has seen overwhelming success in its first two years in Houston. The first meetings saw nearly 25,000 fans, while last year's battle set a new Southland Conference attendance record with 25,083.
In addition to the success at the gate, the game has also produced the past three Southland Conference Champions. SFA won back-to-back conference titles in 2009 and 2010, while the Bearkats took the title last season.
The 2012 version of the Battle of the Piney Woods is slated for Saturday, Oct. 6, and will kick off at 3 p.m.
