NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will take on ULM Wednesday in its only game of the week. First pitch against the Warhawks is scheduled for 5 p.m. from the ULM Softball Complex.
SFA is 8-21 on the year with a 2-8 mark in road contests. The Warhawks come into the contest at 14-13 overall. ULM is 6-3 at home this season.
The Ladyjacks are coming off their first series win in Southland Conference play after taking two of three games at Northwestern State over the weekend. SFA outlasted the Demons for a 3-2 win in 11 innings in the opener then got an outstanding pitching performance from senior Monika Covington for a 4-1 win in Sunday's finale.
Covington took the win in both contests and allowed only one earned run in 17 innings of work. She finished with 18 strikeouts, giving her 110 for the year, the third-best total in the Southland. For her efforts, she was voted the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week.
SFA is 4-3 over its last seven games, a stretch that started with a 10-3 win over ULM in the teams' first meeting on March 9. The Ladyjacks used five hits and two Warhawk errors to jump out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning of that game. SFA had nine hits in the contest, led by Cadie Weaver, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
The 10-3 verdict in Nacogdoches started a three-game slide for ULM, but the Warhawks have won three of their last four games, including a 2-1 series victory at Troy over the weekend. ULM hosts Centenary Tuesday night as part of a six-game home stand for the Warhawks.
