FRISCO, Texas - A year after sharing the Southland Conference championship with Texas State, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team is projected to repeat as league champion, according to preseason polling of Southland head coaches and sports information directors. The Ladyjacks tied Texas State at the top of the league's two preseason polls, announced Wednesday by conference staff.
SFA got 92 points in the coaches' poll and 93 points in the SID poll to finish in a dead heat with Texas State. Three coaches gave their first-place votes to the Ladyjacks, while SFA picked up the first-place nod on four of the SID ballots.
The Ladyjacks went 29-20 last season and posted a record of 20-10 in league play to earn a share of the first Southland title in program history. Head coach Gay McNutt was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year.
Senior Monika Covington leads a small group of returners from that squad. Covington was named to the First-Team Preseason All-Southland squad after earning her third straight all-conference honor last spring.
The Ladyjacks open the season on Feb. 11, when they take on Ohio in the Houston Tournament.
