NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After recovering from a four-game skid, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will try to carry its momentum into an eight-game road trip as the stretch run of the 2010 season begins this week. SFA will take on Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Ladyjacks are coming off four straight wins last week. After enduring a run of four straight shutout losses, SFA recovered by outscoring Centenary and Southeastern Louisiana, 25-5, combined in four consecutive victories. The Ladyjacks' three-game sweep against Southeastern moved SFA into a tie for first place in the Southland Conference with a 16-5 record. SFA is 24-12 overall.
Junior Monika Covington picked up the win in three of SFA's four victories last week, earning Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors in the process. At the plate, the Ladyjacks had five players - Jessica Arana, Karissa Jones, Ashley Struchtemeyer, Kendal Harper and Kayla Gutowski - hit .500 or better for the week, and SFA batted .416 as a team.
Louisiana-Monroe comes into Wednesday's games with a 20-17 record. The Warhawks have won four straight and five of their last six contests. ULM is coming off a three-game sweep against Western Kentucky. The Warhawks are 11-5 at home this season. SFA was scheduled to play ULM in a home doubleheader on March 20, but the games were rained out.
Following Wednesday's games, the Ladyjacks will resume Southland Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Central Arkansas.
