SFA Finishes Strong at Arkansas, Mt. SAC

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team wrapped up the 2009 John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the 2009 Mt. SAC relays in Walnut, Calif., Saturday evening. Several SFA athletes punched their tickets to the regional championships next month.
Junior Frednisha Marshall posted an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the women's hammer throw Friday afternoon with her toss of 182-10. Marshall finished third overall in the event. Classmate Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye set an NCAA regional mark, and broke her own school record with her time of 13.76 in the preliminaries of the women's 100-meter hurdles, but was unable to finish in the finals. It is the second event this season that Egboba-Waye has posted a regional qualifier (long jump).
Freshman Brittainy Robertson clocked 4:42.87 to win the women's 1,500-meter run. Classmate Danielle Burchett just missed an individual title in the women's 800 meters. Burchett recorded a time of 2:15.96 to finish second overall.
SFA had several athletes post top-10 finishes over the weekend. In the men's and women's 5,000 meters, which was run late Friday evening, SFA finished with three in the field's top 10. Freshman Brette Fleming-Wood recorded a time of 18:05.66 to finish ninth overall, followed by teammate Megan Jenkins (18:07.97). Sophomore Dennis Yeats finished 10th (14:51.58) in the men's race. Junior Matt Langdon was eighth in the men's discus with throw of 160-4. The sophomore tandem of Austin Hardy (1:57.77) and Sam Hulse (2:00.27) finished ninth and 10th in the men's 800 meters. Longview sophomore Camelia Sams posted an eighth-place finish in the women's triple jump. Sams recorded a mark of 36-9.50. SFA's 4X100-meter relays team also recorded top-10 finishes. The Ladyjacks finished third with a time of 47.18, while the 'Jacks finished sixth (42.19) overall.
The SFA freshmen class played a big role in the team's success Saturday afternoon. Nick McCloud advanced to the finals of the men's 110-meter hurdles where he finished seventh overall with a regional qualifying time of 14.18. Marcus Mitchell and Kyle Bishop recorded top-10 finishes in the hammer throw. Mitchell finished ninth overall with a mark of 152-7, while Bishop posted a mark of 150-7 to finish 10th. Fellow freshman-thrower Jon Arthur finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 50-10.25. Freshman Katrina Turner clocked a time of 58.23 to finish eighth in the women's 400-meter dash.
The SFA distance squad wrapped up the Mt. SAC Relays Friday with Stephanie Ganter competing the women's 5,000 meters. Ganter crossed the finish line in under 16:46 to advance to the NCAA regional championships.
Several track and field events had not completed at press time. The SFA track and field team returns to action Saturday, April 25 when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to compete in the Northwestern State Invitational.
