NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Seniors Travis Beavers, Keith Mahipala, Frednisha Marshall and junior Adam Wolfe have been named 2010 track and field team captains announced head coach Phil Olson Tuesday morning.
"These four captains are as fine a group of young men and women that you'll ever come across," said Olson. "They are each very talented in their discipline, have unique leadership qualities that set them apart from their teammates, have a high regard for the success of this team, and are completely selfless when called upon to help the program. They realize the goals of our track and field and cross country teams, and they each work very hard to make our success happen. I am proud of Keith, Freddy, Travis, and Adam for all they have meant to SFA as student-athletes, and as leaders of this team."
Beavers is one of the top returning sprinters on the 'Jacks squad. A two-time All-Southland Conference selection, Beavers was a member of the Lumberjacks 4x400-meter relay team that set a school record, and qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships last season.
Mahipala is one of the top returning distance runners in the conference. A two-time All-Southland Conference honoree, Mahipala turned in one of the best performances in school history at the outdoor conference meet last season in the steeplechase. Mahipala outkicked the competition in the final 250 meters to win the league's individual title and qualify for the regional championships.
Wolfe has been one of the team's leaders over the course of the past two seasons. He recorded a fifth-place finish in the javelin as a freshman with his throw of 192-3. Wolfe duplicated his performance, just missing all-conference honors with a fifth-place finish in 2009.
Marshall recorded one of the most memorable seasons in the history of the track and field program last season. The four-time SLC individual champion broke the school record in the weight throw four times last season on her way to winning the conference title, and advanced to the NCAA Championships in the event. Marshall set a school record, and earned All-America honors with a throw of 69-4.25 to finish third overall. Marshall closed out the 2009 indoor season by repeating as the SLC Indoor Outstanding Field Athlete. She tacked on two more individual titles during the outdoor season winning the conference hammer and shot put title.
