FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Josh Alexander was named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, according to a story released Tuesday by league officials. This marks the third honor of the season for the Lumberjack junior and the fourth time in six weeks for an SFA player to take the award. Alexander has won the SLC Player of the Week award five times in his career.
Alexander, a forward from Shreveport, La., led SFA to back-to-back wins last week over Lamar and McNeese State, averaging 22.5 points per game along the way. He scored 26 points on six 3-point baskets -- both season highs -- against the Cardinals last Thursday, then poured in 19 points against the Cowboys. For the week, Alexander shot 50 percent from both the field overall (13-for-26) and from 3-point range (9-for-18). He was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line in those two games, continuing a run of 15 straight made foul shots that now extends back three-plus contests.
Alexander has been one of the hottest scorers in the league over the last month of the season. In SFA's last nine games, he has averaged 18.1 points per game, knocking down 50.9 percent from the floor and 47.1 percent from 3-point range. He also averages 5.3 rebounds per game over that span. With his increased production in recent games, Alexander is on pace to move into 11th place on the SFA career scoring list by the end of the this season, and he is only 10 3-point buckets shy of taking over the career lead in that category.
Alexander and the Lumberjacks (15-2, 3-1 SLC) will be back in action Thursday, when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to take on rival Sam Houston State (14-3, 2-2 SLC). The game is set for a 7 p.m. start from Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
