NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Back to Baylor: The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will make its second trip of the season to Waco, Texas, Tuesday, when the Ladyjacks travel to take on Baylor in a doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 5 p.m. from Baylor's Getterman Stadium. SFA (3-10) played five games in Waco in the Baylor Getterman classic to open the season earlier this month. One of those five contests was a 9-3 loss against the Bears, then ranked No. 18 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll. Baylor (15-4) was ranked 17th in that same poll last week and was 16th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25.
Last Time Out: The Ladyjacks dropped four straight games at the Holiday Inn Select Tulsa Festival over the weekend. SFA opened with back-to-back losses against Missouri State (7-0) and Eastern Illinois (6-4) on Friday, then got swept in a mid-day doubleheader by Creighton (4-1) and host team Tulsa (9-1) on Saturday. As a team, the Ladyjacks batted .200 and scored just six runs in the four games. SFA had committed just seven errors through nine games entering the tournament, but the Ladyjacks doubled that figure with seven more errors during their trip to Tulsa. Sophomore outfielder Benet Higgs led the Ladyjacks at the plate. Higgs was 6-for-13 (.462) with a double, triple and a run scored. Freshman infielder Briana Bishop went 3-for-12 (.250) and blasted two home runs. She finished with three RBI for the weekend.
The Bears: Baylor is coming off a 4-1 loss against Illinois State in the NFCA Leadoff Classic, but the Bears have won three of their last four games and five of their last seven. Baylor opened the season on a nine-game winning streak. The Bears have outscored their opponents, 115-54, so far this season and have posted a 2.26 team ERA. Baylor is batting .344 as a team. In their first meeting with SFA, the Bears notched a 9-3 victory over the Ladyjacks. SFA took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of that game, but Baylor scored nine unanswered runs to collect the win. Four Baylor players finished with multiple hits in the game, and the Bears hit two home runs.
The Coaches: SFA is coached by Jenifer Wells. Wells is in her second season at SFA, where she holds a 23-38 (.377) record. In her five-year collegiate coaching career, Wells is 159-146 (.521). Baylor is coached by Glenn Moore. Moore is 267-126 (.679) in seven seasons at Baylor. He is 406-168 (.707) in nine seasons as a collegiate head coach.
