PLANO, Texas - Former Stephen F. Austin Athletics Director Steve McCarty has been inducted into the Southland Conference Hall of Honor announced league officials Thursday afternoon. McCarty joins Nicholls State's Romana Tedjakusuma and Northwestern State's LaMark Carter in the 2006 class of entrants. The SLC Hall of Honor ceremonies are scheduled for Thursday June 1 in Galveston, Texas, at the San Luis Resort Spa & Conference Center at 7:15 p.m.
"The Class of 2006 exemplifies the reasons why there's a Southland Conference Hall of Honor," league commissioner Tom Burnett said. "Steve McCarty served as one of the most accomplished athletic administrators in the history of the conference. LaMark's and Romana's athletic achievements were also among the greatest ever in league annals, and their induction is well-deserved. This is a momentous occasion for the Southland Conference."
McCarty served his university and the Southland Conference in many roles during his 21 years in Nacogdoches, Texas. After starting his career as a football coach, including a year as an assistant at Lamar University, McCarty moved into administration. He became assistant athletics director at SFA in 1984 and held that position until being named athletics director in 1990.
During his time as the athletics director, SFA was witness to unparalleled success across the board. The football team earned two NCAA I-AA playoff berths, three NCAA Volleyball Championship appearances and two NIVC appearances, 14 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship appearances, an appearance in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional, two Southland Conference soccer titles, an NCAA Soccer Championship berth, six SLC cross country titles, two SLC women's track and field titles and one SLC men's track and field title.
Upon announcing his retirement from SFA in 2005, the Steve McCarty Citizenship Award was created by the SLC Awards Committee. It was established to recognize the male and female student-athlete who exhibits outstanding qualities in citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership and community service.
