NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin soccer coach Jaime Frias announced Wednesday the addition of two new players to the Ladyjack roster. Rachel Schwind and Lauren Fricks have both transferred to SFA from Texas Tech. Schwind and Fricks each saw significant playing time last fall in their freshman season with the Red Raiders.
"I'm excited to have both of these players join our Ladyjack family," the coach said. "I recruited both of them coming out of high school and look forward to working with them this spring. The fact that they have Big 12 experience will help them meet the expectations our team sets each and every year."
Schwind is a 5-3 midfielder from Sugar Land. She earned seven starts for the Red Raiders last season. She was team captain of her Clements High School squad in her senior year and was named to the all-state team, following the season. Schwind was also named to the All-Greater Houston team as a senior. She was a first-team all-district selection in both her junior and senior seasons. Schwind played club soccer for the Eclipse and the Challenge.
"Rachel will add a great deal of depth to an already strong midfield," Frias said. "She has great vision and does very well at keeping possession of the ball. You can always count on her strong work ethic every time she steps on the field."
Fricks, a 5-6 forward who hails from Mansfield, also started seven games at Texas Tech last season. As a high school player at Summit, Fricks led her team to three district championships. She was elected team captain for both her junior and senior campaigns. Fricks was a two-time selection to the first-team all-district squad and was named second-team all-area in 2002. She was named to the all-region team as a sophomore, junior and senior. For her career, Fricks finished with 67 goals and 32 assists.
"Lauren Fricks has the potential to be one of the fastest players on our team," Frias said. "She's an explosive outside player with great crossing ability. We will look for her to contribute as an attacking threat."
Fricks and Schwind join a Ladyjack team coming off back-to-back Southland Conference championships. Last season, SFA finished with a 14-4 mark and set a school record with 11 shutouts. The Ladyjacks also went 7-0 against SLC foes, completing the first unbeaten, untied SLC season in conference history.
