NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will be looking for its first win in five tries Saturday when it hosts McNeese State. SFA (7-6, 0-3) has lost four straight games, including three straight to open Southland Conference play. The game against the Cowboys is set to begin at 4 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
LAST GAME: SFA fell to 0-3 in conference play and lost its fourth straight game with a 70-65 home loss to Lamar on Thursday. The Lumberjacks led only once -- by one point early in the first half -- but dogged the Cardinals throughout the contest. SFA pulled to within two points twice over the game's final seven minutes, but Lamar hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to ice the game. Junior forward Antuane Miller led SFA with 22 points.
VS. McNEESE STATE: McNeese State leads the all-time series against SFA, 35-30. The Cowboys have taken seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams. SFA earned a split of last year's season series when the Lumberjacks beat McNeese at home, 63-58, then were defeated on the road, 56-43.
THE COWBOYS: McNeese State brings an 8-6 record to Saturday's game. The Cowboys are also out to a red-hot 3-0 Southland Conference start and have won their last four games. McNeese opened SLC play with a road win over the same Lamar squad that defeated SFA on Thursday, and the Cowboys are coming off a 60-57 victory at Sam Houston State.
THE COACHES: Danny Kaspar is in his sixth season as head coach of the Lumberjacks. Including a nine-year stint as head coach at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Kaspar is 302-121 (.714) over his 14-year coaching career. Kaspar has guided the Lumberjacks to an 83-69 (.546) mark during his tenure. Tic Price is in his fifth year as the Cowboys' head coach. His McNeese State teams have gone 68-60 (.531) over that span. Price is 161-114 (.585) in nine-plus seasons as a head coach.
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks will hit the road for a game against Texas State on Thursday. The contest in San Marcos is set for a 7 p.m. start. ™ NOTE: For complete game notes click the "Weekly Release" link in the side bar on the men's basketball home page.
