JONESBORO, Ark. - After displaying little offensive firepower in its first two matches of the season, the SFA Ladyjack soccer team filled up the nets in a 5-0 win over Arkansas-Little Rock Friday at the Lady Indian Invitational on the campus of Arkansas State.
Sophomore midfielder Kristel Lindsey led the onslaught, coming off the bench to score two goals, one in each half. She netted her first goal in the 40th minute when she took a pass from junior Andrea Ramirez and chipped a shot over the goalkeeper. Lindsey notched her second goal -- and the Ladyjacks' final score -- unassisted at the 83-minute mark.
"We did an outstanding job of getting on the attack," head coach Jaime Frias said. "That was good to see, coming off a weekend where we only scored one goal."
SFA split its season-opening matches with a 3-0 loss to Texas A&M and a 1-0 win over Baylor. SFA was outshot by its opponents in each match. The Ladyjack offense had no such trouble Friday night.
Freshman Amanda Lackey opened the scoring when she broke through the Arkansas-Little Rock defense and beat the keeper one-on-one for her second goal of the season. After Lindsey's goal, the Ladyjacks took a 2-0 edge to halftime.
SFA was back on the attack early in the second half. In the 61st minute, freshman Megan Spitzmueller gathered a rebound off a shot by classmate Jessica Cotton and slipped it past the keeper. Last year's leading scorer, junior Shahin Pabani, got in on the action in the 77th minute when she scored unassisted.
SFA senior goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki logged 75 minutes in net and recorded three saves, combining on the shutout with junior Vanessa Callaway. Arkansas-Little Rock recorded just nine shots.
"The goals we scored and the shutout were both team efforts, which I was pleased with," Frias said. "It's good to see us playing this well together."
The Ladyjacks (2-1) return to action Sunday, when they take on host team Arkansas State. The match with the Lady Indians is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
