NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Tragedy struck the Stephen F. Austin State University campus Friday afternoon when it was learned that Greg Wallace, a member of the Lumberjack basketball team, collapsed on the court in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Wallace, a transfer from the United States Military Academy, was in the facility shooting baskets when he collapsed.
Emergency personnel were called to the scene and transported Wallace to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No cause of death has been determined at this time.
Team members, coaches and staff members were en route to Hammond, Louisiana at the time of the incident and have returned to Nacogdoches. Saturday's game with Southeastern Louisiana has been postponed and will be made up at a date yet to be determined.
"Greg's death has stunned our players and coaching staff," said SFA coach Danny Kaspar. "We are all feeling pretty numb right now. You don't ever think this will happen to someone to whom you are so close. Greg was the consumate team player and did whatever was asked of him. I really thought he would make significant contributions to our team next year because of his court intelligence and savvy."
"He had a great sense of humor and knew when to use it. I'm very appreciative to have known him for the short time I did. Our hearts go out to Greg's family," said Kaspar.
Stephen F. Austin State University athletic department officials will release more information as it is available.
