
Ladyjacks Win Bayou Classic

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin track and field teams competed at the Bayou Classic Friday and Saturday hosted by Rice. The Ladyjacks walked away with the team championship outscoring second-place Rice, 179-133. The Lumberjacks scored 120 points to finish fourth behind Sam Houston State.
The Ladyjacks brought home seven individual titles, led by senior Destine Rawls (Houston, Texas). Rawls set the standard in the shot put with her toss of 14.80 meters. She followed that up with by taking first in the discus with a throw of 45.20m. Freshman Jocelyn Stevens (Schertz, Texas) led the charge for an SFA sweep in the 400m hurdles. Stevens crossed the line with a time 1:02.41. Junior Bonnie McHan (Abilene, Texas) finished just seven-hundredths of a second off the pace as she crossed the line second (1:02.48). Junior Katie Lonergan (Stephenville, Texas) finished off the sweep as she crossed the line third with a time of 1:04.13. Senior Sonya McMillan (Killeen, Texas) was the individual champion in the 200m dash, finishing with a time of 24.68. Junior Jessica Claiborne (Spring, Texas) was the 100m dash individual champion with her time of 12.23. Sophomore Ana Rodriguez (Dallas, Texas) won the 3,000m run with a time of 10:55.04. Rodriguez finished just ahead of freshman Jessica Partin (Priddy, Texas) who crossed the line at 11:08.97. Senior Misty Ballard-Swan (Carlsbad, N.M.) won the pole vault with her jump of 12-6.00.
The Lumberjacks brought home three individual titles led by sophomore Nathan Flores (Kingwood, Texas) who won the 3,000m steeplechase with a new personal and school record time of 9:06.56. Freshman Andre Ford (DeKalb, Texas) was the individual champion in the 100m dash with his time of 10.73. Ford also finished second in the 200m dash (21.48). Sophomore Ryan Rossner (Merairie, La.) won the discus with his throw of 47.30m.
"I'm not happy with the way we've been competing as a team," said SFA head coach Phil Olson. "I think we're doing things well in parts but we've got areas to work on. Obviously we want to be at our best when we head to the Southland Conference Championships but we have some work to do."
The SFA track and field teams return to action Wednesday at the Texas Relays Austin, Texas. The relays are a four-day event that will run through Saturday.
