HOUSTON, Texas -
HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the 2002 indoor season Saturday at the Houston Indoor Classic.
The Ladyjacks were led by senior Misty Ballard-Swan (Carlsbad, N.M.). She won the individual title in the pole vault with her vault of 12 feet, 7.50 inches. That mark was an NCAA provisional qualifier. Senior Destine Rawls (Houston, Texas) set a school record in the shot put with her throw of 48-8.75. That mark was good enough for fourth place. Junior Blake Gordon (Gladewater, Texas) followed Rawls' record toss with throw of 47-10.00 in the shot put, to finish fifth.
"This was a tough meet," said SFA head coach Phil Olson. "We wanted to know exactly where we stood coming into the season. Now we know where we need to get to, we just need to take the appropriate steps to achieve it."
The Stephen F. Austin track and field teams return to action Saturday in the LSU Purple Tiger meet. The meet will take place from Baton Rouge, La.
