
Southland Conference Weekly Tennis Update

Texas-Arlington, defending Southland Conference champion, halted a five-match losing skid by blanking New Mexico State 6-1 at the UTA Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Senior Lisa Jackson led the Mavericks by topping New Mexico State's No. 1 player, Elke Blodau, in straights sets 6-2, 6-3. UTA saw two matches go to three sets. No. 2 Maria Stepanova downed Claire Hamilton 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, while No. 6 Gwen Behrendt rallied to beat Patti Diaz 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
UTA, now 2-5, will try to keep the momentum as league play begins this week. The Mavs open their home Southland slate against Nicholls State Saturday morning, then host Southeastern Louisiana Sunday.
Nicholls (2-2) did not play last week while SLU (3-2) is coming off a 6-1 loss to Troy State, which ended a three-match winning streak. Senior Anna Doan ran her consecutive singles wins to four in a row by defeating TSU's No. 2 player 6-3, 6-4. Doan, the Southland Conference player of the week, improved to 5-0 at No. 1 doubles with teammate Karin Mohl.
The Lady Lions will start their Conference schedule by traveling to Huntsville to meet Sam Houston State (1-6) Saturday morning. SHSU is struggling after losing its last five, including three in a trip to Colorado last week.
Northwestern State (2-5) visits Texas-San Antonio and Southwest Texas this weekend. The Demons lost to Arkansas-Little Rock 6-1 in their only match last week.
UTSA (2-3) was idle and has lost its last two. After NWLa., the Roadrunners will host Louisiana-Monroe Sunday morning. ULM (2-7) lost two last week to Arkansas teams.
SWT (1-5) had its match with Trinity canceled because of bad weather, but the Bobcats got in the contest against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi yesterday. They lost their second straight match 6-1. Junior Lisa Sternberg scored the only SWT point with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
Lamar (3-7), which is winless in its last four matches, will face McNeese State, then Stephen F. Austin this weekend. McNeese (3-2) most recently lost to Louisiana-Lafayette. SFA (0-3) has hardly seen any action this season. The Ladyjacks have not played since Feb. 17.

Anna Doan * Southeastern Louisiana * Sr * Johannesburg, South Africa Anna Doan won her fourth consecutive singles match with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set decision over Troy State's Jayne Hutchison at number two singles. Doan then improved to 5-0 at number one doubles with teammate Karin Mohl after they downed TSU's tandem of Carolina Aravena and Talia Flores 8-4.
