'Jacks Land Two On All-Academic Team

PLANO, Texas - Two members of the 2001 Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team have earned All-Soutland Football League academic honors. Chuck Thompson, a senior from Haltom City, and David Phillips, a sophomore form Kemp, were both named to the team this week.
The team, voted on by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrator, honors those who have accumulated at least a 3.00 grade point average while serving as a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials on the playing field. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
Topping the list of 22 players named All-Academic is Gene Tennison, an offensive lineman at Northwestern State. The senior from Dayton, Texas, who was named All-Southland after helping the Demons to an 8-4 record and into the playoffs, has the highest GPA on the team at 3.69 in his major of business administration.
Defensive back John Szczech of Southwest Texas, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, ranks second to Tennison with a 3.65 in Political Science.
