Men’s Golf Third through Opening Round of 2018 Southland Championship

‘Jacks shoot 19-over 307 on first 18 holes of league championship, Angelo Leyvani cards a 2-over 74 to stand tied for seventh
McKINNEY, Texas – Through one round of play at the 2018 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship in McKinney, Texas, Stephen F. Austin is in third place after shooting a 19-over 307 at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club Monday. Paced by junior Angelo Leyvani, the third-seeded Lumberjacks sit 18 strokes off of the lead, held by top-seeded Sam Houston State (1-over 289). Second-seeded McNeese is 12 strokes ahead of SFA after tallying a 7-over 295 on the first 18 holes of play.
Leyvani, who is tied for seventh among 55 total golfers on the individual leaderboard, shot a 2-over 74 Monday to turn in the lowest score by a Lumberjack. He is six strokes off of the lead, which is held by Sam Houston State's Noah Steele (4-under 68). Both Lewis George of Central Arkansas and Ian Berrigan of McNeese are tied for second place on the leaderboard after carding 1-under 71's.
Freshmen Andy Lopez and Steven Fabik both shot a 5-over 77 on the par-72, 7,219-yard Dye Course in Monday's opening round to sit tied for 15th. Senior Blake Stock recovered from a challenging front nine to finish with a day one score of 7-over 79 and tie for 24th. Rounding out SFA's competitors is junior Jake Hendrix, who is tied for 40th with a first-round tally of 10-over 82.
The three-day, 54-hole championship continues Tuesday with the second round as the third and final round will conclude the event Wednesday morning. Both rounds will get started at 7:30 a.m. as teams tee off of hole 1.
For the second consecutive day the 'Jacks will be paired with McNeese and Sam Houston State for Tuesday's second round as the trio will tee off beginning at 9:45 a.m. Hendrix will get things started for SFA with a 9:45 a.m. tee time, followed by Stock at 9:54 a.m., Fabik at 10:03 a.m., Lopez at 10:12 a.m. and Leyvani at 10:21 a.m.
The 'Jacks are seeking their fourth Southland title and first since 1999.
The winner of the championship will gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, held first at regional sites Monday-Wednesday, May 14-16. The selection show for the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will take place Wednesday, May 2, and will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel, available nationwide.
