Men’s Golf Sixth at Border Olympics Through Two Rounds of Play

‘Jacks shoot scores of 1-over 289 and 3-under 285, respectively, in the first two rounds, total two-round score of 2-under 574
LAREDO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men's golf team turned in its second-best two-round score of the season Friday at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, and shot its second-lowest round of 2017-18. The Lumberjacks turned in a two-round total of 2-under 574 after shooting a 1-over 289 in the opening round of play and a 3-under 285 in the second round to stand in sixth place on the 17-team leaderboard. The 285 is the second-lowest single round shot by SFA this season after shooting a 6-under 282 in the second round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate this past September.
The 'Jacks sit three strokes behind Louisiana-Monroe's 5-under 571 and two strokes ahead of fellow Southland Conference member McNeese (E 576) after two rounds of play on the par-72, 7,375-yard Laredo Country Club golf course. Ranked 68th according to Golfstat.com, Arkansas State leads the two-day, 54-hole tournament after shooting 9-under 567 Friday. Campbell, ranked 60th nationally, is tied for second with No. 69 Sam Houston State, both tallying two-round totals of 7-under 569.
Freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) shot his sixth and seventh rounds of par or better golf this season Friday, registering an even par 72 and a 1-under 71 for a combined score of 1-under 143 as SFA's top golfer at the event. He is currently tied for 23rd out of 97 total golfers, while fellow freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) stands tied for 34 with a two-round total at an even par 144. Fabik shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round before notching a career-low round of 2-under 70 on the second 18 holes.
Not too far behind Fabik is junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas), who is tied for 37th after shooting an even par 72 and a 1-over 73 for a double round total of 1-over 145. Senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas) had a nice rebound after a 4-over 76 first round, improving his score by five strokes and recording a 1-under 71 in round two. He sits tied for 48th with a two-round score of 3-over 147. Junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) shot his second round at par or better this season with a 1-under 71 opening round. However, after a 7-over 79 in round two Hendrix owns a composite score of 6-over 150 and sits tied for 77th in the tournament's field of competition.
Sam Houston State's Camden DeBonis, who is competing as an individual, and the Bearkats' William Holcomb are leading the Border Olympics with two-round totals of 8-under 136. DeBonis shot an impressive 8-under 64 in the first round of play, while Western Kentucky's Billy Tom Sargent stands in third place just one stroke back with a two-round tally of 7-under 137.
After 36 holes of play, the final 18 will conclude the tournament Saturday morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Both Fabik and Lopez will tee off from hole No. 5 for the third and final round Saturday as Leyvani will begin on hole No. 6 and Stock on hole No. 7. Hendrix will tee off from hole No. 8 as SFA is paired with ULM, McNeese and Little Rock.
