Men’s Golf Completes Round One of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

‘Jacks shoot 21-over 309 in the opening round as senior Blake Stock is tied for 26th on the individual leaderboard
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Through one round of play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Springs, California, Stephen F. Austin men's golfer Blake Stock is tied for 26th among 135 total competitors at the Classic Club. As a team, the Lumberjacks completed day one on the par-72, 7,322-yard course with a score of 21-over 309 to stand in 22nd place in the highly-challenging tournament.
SFA, the lone representative from the Southland Conference in the 23-team event field, began the three-day, 54-hole tournament with its lone senior shooting an even par Friday. The Hewitt, Texas, native is seeking his first top-20 finish of the season and is one of 32 golfers who shot par or better in the opening round of the event.
Southern Illinois' Peyton Wilhoit shot a 6-under 66 to stand atop the individual leaderboard as California's Sebastian Crampton recorded a day one score of 5-under 67 for second place. Six players are tied for third with a first-round tally of 4-under 68.
The 'Jacks got opening round scores of 5-over 77 from freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) and 8-over 80 from both freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) and junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) in their first tournament of 2018 and first competition in over three months. In just his second event this season and first not competing as an individual, junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) registered a 10-over 82 in the first round.
Featuring six teams ranked in the top 50 nationally by Golfstat.com, three of which are among the top 25 teams in the nation, the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate saw three programs shoot under par in the first round. California, ranked 15th nationally, shot a 13-under 275 as a team on day one to lead the team standings, while No. 14 Texas Tech is second after tallying a 4-under 284. Colorado is third with a one-day total of 1-under 287.
Play will continue Saturday morning with the second round getting underway at 9 a.m. CST. Sunday's final round will also begin at 9 a.m. CST with both days having a double-tee start from holes No. 1 and No. 10.
For Saturday's second round, SFA is paired with Wichita State, South Dakota State and players competing as individuals from second-ranked Oklahoma State and Colorado. The 'Jacks will tee off from hole No. 10 at 9:20 a.m. CST with players teeing off every 10 minutes until 10 a.m. CST.
