Bowling Finishes Day One of the 2018 Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic in Eighth Place

Ladyjacks tally 4,808 total pins on day one of SFA’s Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic, go 2-3 through the first five matches of pool play
HOUSTON, Texas – Day one of the 2018 Stormin' Ladyjack Classic is in the books and host Stephen F. Austin is in eighth place after the first five matches of pool play at Copperfield Bowl in Houston. The Ladyjacks tallied 4,808 total pins Saturday and posted a 2-3 record, registering wins over eighth-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore and defeating St. Francis College (N.Y.).
The fourth annual tournament, which features 16 of the nation's top-25 programs, the top five and eight of the top 10, is led by defending national champion and defending Stormin' Ladyjack Classic champion McKendree University. The second-ranked Bearcats totaled 5,277 pins Friday and are a perfect 5-0. Top-ranked Nebraska is second on the leaderboard with a pinfall total of 5,050 and an unblemished 5-0 mark, while fellow Southland Bowling League member and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt is third a 1-4 record but 5,004 pins.
SFA claimed 943 pins behind senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), juniors Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) and Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Illinois), freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.), senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) and freshman Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) in its opening match of the day, earning a 40-pin advantage over No. 8 Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Ladyjacks bowled two games over 200 in the victory, including a 219 in game five.
The following three contests did not go SFA's way as the Ladyjacks tallied 994, 920, and 971 pins, respectively in their middle three matches. UAB, ranked 13th nationally in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top-25 coaches poll, registered 1,021 pins in SFA's second match of the day. The Blazers reached the 200 mark in the first three games of the match as the Ladyjacks claimed a 225-193 win in the final game. McKendree bowled a blistering 1,144 against SFA and recorded four games over 203, including an impressive 280 in the third game and a 252 in the first. In their matchup with No. 22 Maryville University, the Ladyjacks won three out of the five games but were edged by 14 pins. SFA tallied a 212, 213 and a 212 in the first, third and fifth games but defeated by 57 pins in game four.
In its final match of the afternoon, SFA put its name to a score of 980 and topped St. Francis College (N.Y.) by a margin of 56 pins. The Ladyjacks bowled a day-high 237 in the first game of the match, compared to a 156 by the Terriers, and collected a 204 in game two.
Pool play will continue Saturday at the highly-competitive tournament as teams will bowl five traditional team matches. SFA will see 17th-ranked North Carolina A&T in its opening match of the day, followed by No. 18 Duquesne, 11th-ranked Adelphi, No. 16 LIU Brooklyn and 20th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater. Saturday's matches will get underway at 9:25 a.m.
The Stormin' Ladyjack Classic will conclude Sunday, Feb. 18 with three best 4-of-7 bracket play matches to get started at 8:30 a.m. Teams' pinfall total from the first two days of play will determine Sunday's bracket play seeding.
Saturday's traditional team play will determine the all-tournament team as the top six individual finishers will garner all-tournament honors with the top bowler being named MVP.
