
Bowling Leads Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational after 5-0 Start

Ladyjacks post unblemished 5-0 record on day one of play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational in Kenner, Louisiana
KENNER, La. – Competing in its first tournament of the 2017-18 season, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team went a perfect 5-0 on day one of play at Tulane's Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational in Kenner, Louisiana. The Ladyjacks racked up the highest pin total of any school in the 14-team field to sit atop of the tournament standings through the first five matches.
Head coach Amber Lemke went with the lineup of senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), junior Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas), junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.), freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Stephanie Schwartz in the first game of the day and continued with the same five for the remaining four matches. Playing five, five-game Baker matches, SFA knocked down over 1,000 pins in four out of the five contests to post a day one pinfall total of 5,266. The Ladyjacks averaged a game score of 210.6 through the 25 games bowled for the highest average of the day.
In the opening match, SFA was a 1,110-849 winner over Southwestern Athletic Conference member Jackson State after tallying a 278 in game two, the highest pin total in any game by the Ladyjacks all day. SFA then outpaced NCAA Division II Lincoln Memorial University by a score of 1,030-936 in the second Baker match of the morning, before edging fellow Southland Bowling League member and fifth-ranked Sam Houston State by 35 pins. In the bowling edition of the Battle of the Piney Woods, the Ladyjacks came away with a 1,089-1,054 victory after outscoring the Bearkats by considerable margins in the first two games of the match, 247-182 and 216-173.
In the fourth match of day one, SFA defeated another SWAC school in Texas Southern by a count of 1,061-914. The sixth-ranked Ladyjacks wrapped up the first day of competition by taking down host Tulane, who is ranked No. 17 in the nation, with a score of 976-880, despite bowling a day-low 189 in game two of the match.
The Green Wave of Tulane sit in second place with a day one pin total of 5,244, while Sam Houston State is third after totaling 5,152 pins Friday.
Five traditional team matches await SFA Saturday as the Ladyjacks will take on Southland opponent Valparaiso in the opening match of the day, followed by 19th-ranked UAB, No. 17 Tulane and Florida A&M. The fifth match Saturday will be a position round with teams paired up against one another based on their standing in the tournament. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play will be based on the team with the highest pin total through the first two days of competition.
Saturday's matches will get underway at 8:55 a.m. from the AMF All Star Lanes in Kenner.
